Now celebrating its 50th anniversary, the Kamei Royale was the first to introduce Vancouverites to the traditional food and culture of Japan at their original West Pender St. location. Vancouver had few Japanese restaurants in the 1970’s, and Kamei Royale broke new ground, specializing in sushi and sashimi prepared by chefs professionally trained in Japan. Service staff dressed in the traditional kimono added authenticity. Finding a comfortable access to the culture through the food, atmosphere, and service Japan is noted for, the city instantly embraced Kamei Royale, making and keeping it a thriving part of the downtown scene. Today, Kamei Royale operates at West Hastings Street serving both traditional and new.
